SATURDAY | It was only meant to be a hour drive to our next stop but the combination of traffic and a stop off at Safeway meant we didn’t arrive at our hilltop accommodation till late in the afternoon. What awaited us was our own mini trailer camp complete with bedroom trailer, kitchen trailer, outdoor bar, fireside lounge room and long drop toilet accompanied by outdoor shower. All of this had been decorated in a rustic kitsch vibe and the result was a hilltop heaven for us to relax in. That’s precisely what we did. We settled into the lounges under the remaining blue sky. When twilight started to set in Ash prepared us a monster cheese platter that we nibbled on as the sun disappeared behind the mountain and the fairy lights started to twinkle. It was the perfect recipe for a peaceful night in but below us in the neighbouring accommodation there was a girl having a 30th birthday party and the entrance to her abode was directly through our outdoor living space. We spent majority of our meal directing people down to the party and we even had the uninvited displeasure of watching two guests urinate on the steps that lead down to the event. With their music thumping in the background we retreated to the bedroom trailer where we snuggled up on our separate beds and read our books by torch light before falling asleep to the distant sound of a party dying down for the night. SUNDAY | By the time we rose on Sunday the day was already in full swing. We both decided to brave the outdoor shower today before we headed off on our day excursion. The water was cold and the shower was exposed for all the world to see. On my way into the shower I swear I heard a growling so I beckoned Ash, made her go first and with no animals in site I stripped off and basked in the sunlight as I cleansed myself for the day. It would have been a liberating experience had the outdoor shower not been directly next to the carpark that the other Airbnb guests use. With the water temp, barely above a chill it was a quick dip before prepping for the day ahead and enjoying breakfast at the bar that overlooked the valley below our trailers before we headed out on a day adventure. First stop was Calabasas, home to the Kardashians and Justin Bieber, for a morning coffee. We’d hope to enjoy some celebrating sightings over our morning brew but all we got was two free pastries from Starbucks (still a win). For a change of pace our next stop was Malibu Winery which hosts picnics and live music on Sundays. It had yet to tick over to the afternoon but already the place was buzzing with groups of people piling in to reserve spaces and rolled-up girls doing photo-shoots around the cute winery layout. The band that was playing didn’t fit the chilled-out vibe that the winery oozed and so after only one drink we were back in the car heading towards the ocean. The Sunday vibe in Malibu was anything but relaxing. The traffic was manic as we crawled along the coastline to our lunch destination: Malibu Country Mark. A combination of high-end shops with a few eateries everyone seemed to be enjoying the sun and family time: expect the celebrities we wanted to see. With no Miley or Cher sightings we piled back into the car and chilled out in the dense traffic as the ocean surged alongside us.
We popped into Safeway for some dinner supplies then back up into the hills we drove ready to kick back and watch the day descend for another day. Tonight, it was just us, the moonlight and the buzzing of silence. After enjoying our meals under the stars, we rugged up and headed off to bed for some reading followed by some much-welcomed sleeping. MONDAY | Breakfast was once enjoyed overlooking the rising valley before we packed up our things, bid farewell to our hilltop haven and began our journey to Big Sur.
