SUNDAY | It’s a mishmash of terrains on the road between Telluride and Moab. It changes quickly between mountains with forest to looming rocks and scrubs. Rather than going up and over we snake around the base of the mountains into Utah with the landscape switching from white to yellow. Our lunch stop for the day is a 50s diner called Blondies. Unlike the diners back home that recreate the 50s vibe, we are pretty sure that this place has been successfully running since that era. The town of Moab is buzzing with tourists jammed into jeeps heading out to the national forest. We sail past them as we head out to our desert glamping accommodation: Moab Under the Stars. Check-In involves a tour of the site which contains a couple of large communal tents and then a scattering of private tents and tee-pees. To ease into the desert experience, we are recommended a moderate local hike to the Corona Arch and so drop our luggage, strap on our boots and are off. After a 10-minute drive into the park we are on foot winding our way up amongst the sandy clifftops and shrubbery. The path isn’t distinct so to find your way you to have to follow mini rock statues that act as guides. The incline is gradual as you snake around the gorge until the Arch comes into site. We linger to admire it for a bit but with twilight setting in shortly we don’t stay too long. Our next stop is Canyonlands National Park to watch the sunset over Island in the Sky. We have to share the experience with a few other visitors but we manage to find ourselves a spot and settle in as the sun descends over the canyons. As we head back into town for a late dinner the sky continues to dance behind us, ensuring we have light until we make it out of the park. For dinner, we settle on a crowded Italian eatery. It does not disappoint. The food is homely and large. The perfect comfort to our cold and tired bodies. After dinner we head back to the camp site where the fire is ablaze so we hang out there for a bit with a couple of the other guests and the staff before we head back to our tent to catch some zzzs.
MONDAY | With minimal to do around the accommodation we are up early in the morning for breakfast in the wilderness before we are in the car ready for a big nature adventure day.
