WEDNESDAY | We'd anticipated a long day in the car but due to road closures not only did we miss out on seeing the Redwoods but we also doubled our time spent on the road. As we headed north signs started to pop up about the highway being closed ahead, but with cars steadily heading in both directions we decided to venture on in hopes that the signs were just out of date. We discovered an hour down the road that they were not when before us stood a lady in high vis with a ‘stop sign’ and a message that informed us we had to return the way we’d come. Due to landslides, the coast trip was off the cards, instead we had to retreat the way we’d come drive east to the inland highway then follow that up. With the additional hour backtracking all up we faced another 6 hours in the car. And so we drove through the remainder of California and up into Oregon. For lunch, we picked a random roadside BBQ restaurant that looked dingy from the outside but was warm and welcoming inside. We feasted fries and burgers, basically the kind of food you shouldn’t eat on days when the only thing you are doing is sitting in a car. Lulled into food comas it was back on the road to weave our way up to Ashland. By the time, we rolled into town we were wrecked. Thankfully the check in process at our sprawling Victoria Era bed and breakfast didn't require human contact and we were able to head up to our room and drop our luggage without having to smile or make polite chitchat. Despite the heavy rain outside we decided to head off to dinner on foot and so rugged up on our wet weather gear we shuffled through the chubby rain until we arrived at Standing Stone Brewery company. Over a couple of local brews and some salads we relaxed into the evening. Post meal we walked around the area and stumbled on some live music at The Brickroom. Just as we saddled up to the bar the acoustic/folk/country sister trio known as TSister struck up their instruments and proceed to entertain us and the packed venue till well into the evening. We mingled a little with the locals but with midnight approaching and our eye lids sagging we made the small trek back through the rain to the comfort of our separate beds and the divinity that is sleep. THURSDAY | After a solid night of shut eye we were up ready to explore the quirky whimsical town of Ashland. For breakfast, we joined the muddled demographic of the town at Morning Glory. The portions were massive and the food was scrumptious and so with not an ounce left on the plate we rolled out of there and onto the street. First up was a wander through Calle Guanajuato Park which then lead us up to the famous Shakespeare Theatre that is the towns prime offering. With the main site ticked off we indulged in some shopping before a sneaky beverage at Gil’s Brewery. We’d only planned a quick trip into Brewery but we got chatting to a local emergency room nurse and she seemed to be in the need of some company, so we stayed talking to her into the afternoon. Once we’d wrapped up the chit chat it was time to be on our way to our next Oregon town: Eugene.
